
Six members of the Miami Township Fire/EMS and a daughter-father duo were honored by the Miami Township Board of Trustees for their heroic efforts in August.
On August 13, Miami Township Fire/EMS responded to a report of a cardiac arrest. A paramedic ambulance and engine arrived at the home of David Lewis to find Mr. Lewis' daughter, Sherri Lewis, performing CPR on her father The paramedics placed Mr. Lewis on a cardiac monitor. which showed him to be in ventricular fibrillation with a wild heartbeat. He was immediately defibrillated by paramedics, and a heart rhythm and pulses were restored.
During transport to the hospital, paramedics learned from their ECG
that Mr. Lewis had suffered a major heart attack. He was further
evaluated at the hospital, and it was determined that he needed bypass
surgery. Mr. Lewis has been making steady recovery since this even
thanks to early CPR performed at the scene by his daughter, and the
rapid response of qualified paramedics with advanced life support
training and equipment.
In recognition of her actions, Miami Township's Board of Trustees presented Sherri Lewis with a "CPR Hero" award. Additionally, the Miami Township Fire/EMS crew was presented "Meritorious Service" awards to recognize their lifesaving interventions.
The crew members included Capt. John Dold, Lynn Mesley, Doug Young, Larry Felix, Bob Cabral and Robert Edmonds.
"These individuals' quick response that night saved the life of Mr. Lewis," said Chief Jim Whitworth of the Miami Township Fire/EMS.
