Road Patrol

The Road Patrol Section is the "core" of the department and primarily to the first response to emergency and non-emergency calls for service.

These dedicated men and women work 24/7 in two 12-hour shifts investigating crime, responding to emergencies and pro-actively implementing patrols to protect the citizens of Miami Township. Serving the public needs in a caring, courteous and professional manner to ensure the highest quality of life for all citizens is our primary goal.

At the beginning of each shift, the officers attend a briefing where they receive pertinent information such as wanted persons, runaways, missing persons and any unfinished items from the previous shift. Our patrol vehicles are equipped with Laptop Computers, which allow officers to receive their calls with all the dispatched information readily available to them. The officers are also able to quickly check the status of a vehicle or persons by simply entering some basic information into the terminal.

The laptops also allow officers to complete Incident Reports in their patrol car reducing the need for them to leave their vehicle to do a report. Once the officer has completed the report, he or she electronically sends his report to his supervisor for approval. These terminals have been a great asset in saving time and in locating missing persons, wanted persons and recovering stolen vehicles and/or items.

Some of the patrol activities include:

Response to called-for services. Because officers are in constant radio contact with the 9-1-1 Center while in an on-duty status, they are in a position to respond with appropriate speed to a wide variety of calls for service.

Preventive patrol - This activity begins with the officer's mere presence in a marked vehicle in an area; however, in order to be truly effective, must include appropriate inquiry and inspection activity as well. A thorough knowledge of one's patrol sector, along with constant vigilance for the potential violations of public order and the curiosity to determine the reasons for unusual activity, will contribute greatly to the prevention of crimes and accidents.

Crime prevention activities - Through regular contact with the public, officers will become aware of situations which may have the potential for, or appear to encourage criminal activity. The road patrol officer is in an excellent position to educate the citizen and to enlist his aid in the prevention of crime.

Traffic Enforcement - An integral part of keeping our streets and highways safe is the vigilant enforcement of the Vehicle and Traffic laws of the State of Ohio. It is through reasonable and proper enforcement of these laws that a great many lives are saved every year.
